Leading publication, Dagens Industri, Part of Nordic media powerhouse Bonnier Paper Group started awarding the fastest growing companies in Sweden “The Gazelle companies” in 2000.
In a climate of economic turmoil, Midfield Media made the list in 2010 meeting the award’s standards for continuous growth, sound finances, and profitability.
Criteria for 2010 Gazelle companies is consistently outperforming in sales and profitability. 2010 was a tough year to make the list and numbers of Gazelle companies were halved compared to the previous year.
Dagens Industri reports: “With economic turmoil and a major dip in GDP, this year was an acid test of Gazelle companies, to outperform through extremely tough times.
Historically the Gazelles get through economic dips in the world market better than other companies; they find new business ideas, new markets and new customers.”
The term “Gazelles” was invented by US scholar David Birch of Cognetics, who differentiated fast-growing companies (Gazelles) the creators of most new jobs in the economy from the “Elephants” – large companies that consistently strive for rationalizations and reduction of headcount. He considered the Gazelles the most dynamic intermediate layer of the economy.

According to a survey by the Stockholm School of Economics less than 1 percent of joint-stock companies in Sweden meet the criteria of a Gazelle.
